Visualizing Data: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

The Microsoft BI stack provides an assortment of data visualization tools, but do you really know how to use these tools effectively to communicate information clearly? In this half-day session we survey the visualization landscape within the Microsoft BI toolset, how visualizations can distort your data, and how to correct bad or ugly visualizations by correctly selecting the right tool and applying the appropriate design.

Her career spans more than 25 years with a focus on improving business practices through technology. Getting the New DBA Up to Speed with Performance Tuning

In this half-day pre-conference session, we will take an in-depth look at performance tuning for the beginning DBA as well as the "Accidental DBA" in order to help prepare you for beginning to intermediate skills in tuning your real world queries.  We will show you how to get started when you get the production support call stating that the database is slow.  We will cover the basics of reading query execution plans as well as using dynamic management views in order to diagnose poor performance.  We will also cover performance analysis tools and performance troubleshooting as well as some great demos to get you up and running tuning queries.

is a Microsoft MVP and Data Services Consultant in Atlanta, GA.  Like most children, Ed was born at an early age. Ed has worked in the Information Technology field for nineteen years. He started as a programmer with Delphi, Progress 4GL for UNIX & Windows, and Visual Basic. Although he enjoys the creative side of programming, he prefers the structured side of being a DBA and has worked exclusively with SQL Server for seven years.

Mike Lawell is a Principal Consultant and Founding Member of SQL Server Associates in Atlanta, GA, with over 17 years of experience in SQL Server (6.5 to 2014) and 21 years in IT.  Mike’s specialties are performance tuning, high availability and database infrastructure with enterprise clients in the investment banking, payment, energy, accounting, food and manufacturing industries.

He believes that no single platform is the answer to all technology problems. He holds a BS in Computer Information Systems from Louisiana Tech University and an MBA from North Carolina State University, and is the co-author of the Microsoft white paper "Using Power BI in a Hybrid Environment."

In this all day session on Microsoft SQL Server we will be learning about how Microsoft SQL Server works and what needs to be done to keep it up and running smoothly when you don't have a full time database administrator on staff to help you keep it running.

In this session we will cover a variety of topics including backups, upgrade paths, indexing, database maintenance, database corruption, patching, virtualization, disk configurations, high availability, database security, database mail, anti-viruses, scheduled jobs, and much, much more.

After taking this full day session on SQL Server you'll be prepaired to take the information that we go over and get back to the office, get the SQL Server's patched and properly configured so that they run without giving you problems for years to come.

Denny Cherry is the owner and principal consultant for Denny Cherry & Associates Consulting and has over a decade of experience working with platforms such as Microsoft SQL Server, Hyper-V, vSphere and Enterprise Storage solutions. Denny’s areas of technical expertise include system architecture, performance tuning, security, replication and troubleshooting. Denny currently holds several of the Microsoft Certifications related to SQL Server for versions 2000 through 2012 including the Microsoft Certified Master as well as being a Microsoft MVP for several years.  Denny has written several books and dozens of technical articles on SQL Server management and how SQL Server integrates with various other technologies.
