The Enterprise Scripting Workshop

Sean McCown Jen McCown

Sean McCown is is co-owner of MinionWare, LLC, a Certified Master in SQL Server 2008, and a SQL Server MVP with 20 years of experience in databases. He is also founder and  co-owner of the MidnightDBA.com website, where he records free SQL Server training videos and co-hosts the popular web show DBAs@Midnight.

Jen McCown is co-owner of MinionWare, LLC; a Microsoft Certified Master for SQL Server; and an independent consultant. She is Senior Editor at MidnightDBA.com, where she  creates training videos, the DBAs at Midnight webshow, blogs, reviews, and podcasts. Jen is a member, volunteer, and speaker in NTSSUG, PASS, and the PASS Women in Technology virtual chapter.

The database administrator (DBA) life can be frustrating: You rarely have time to innovate because the same tasks fill up your time day after day. Your users are unhappy about how long it takes to resolve “simple” tickets. You need to put big items on hold to manage special requests. As careful as you are, mistakes creep in the busier you get.

In this pre-conference workshop, learn how to develop enterprise scripts with a huge range of uses.. A good set of reusable scripts can reduce task time from hours or days to just a few minutes, and eliminate mistakes  from your environment.

  • Enterprise philosophy: Tackle simple tasks with the whole environment in mind.
  • Single data store: Define the benefits and uses of a single central database for common-use data and metadata.
  • Choice of tools: Choose the best tool (e.g., PowerShell, T-SQL, SSIS) for the job.
  • Environment ground work: Prepare your environment for enterprise scripting.
  • Real-world scripts: Work through dozens of enterprise scripting issues (e.g., alerting, error handling, multiple SQL versions) as you develop a real enterprise script in class

This session is for DBAs with a basic understanding of PowerShell. It’s for anyone who touches backups or security, maintains databases, troubleshoots performance, monitors disk space, or any of a hundred other  DBA tasks. Enterprise scripting is for anyone who has more tasks than time.

The morning will be spent largely in discussion and lecture, so the attendee has solid scripting principles to build upon. The afternoon session will be spent largely in actual enterprise script development.

  • Introducing your enterprise
  • Enterprise philosophy
  • The ideal SQL shop
  • Elements of enterprise scripts

  • T-SQL and regular expressions
  • Developing the Script
  • Applying RegEx

Logistics: Breakfast and lunch will be provided.  The Hilton Garden Inn is located at 1389 Washington Ave, Albany, NY 12206.  This is directly across the street from the campus of SUNY Albany, where the SQL Saturday will be held.  The precon will run from 8:00am until 5:00pm.  Breakfast is served at 8:00, and the precon will begin by 8:30.

You keep hearing about the R programming language.  Azure Machine Learning Studio is built on it and Microsoft recently acquired the R platform vendor, Revolution Analytics, with plans to integrate the R language into SQL Server 2016.  The need to learn R is clear.  This PreCon will get you up to speed on what you need to know.

We will start with a background on what R is and where it came from.  Then you will learn how to install the language shell and R Studio, the development environment.  You’ll learn about the unique vector based architecture of R which makes it such a powerful analysis tool.  Through examination of examples that go from simple to advanced, you will learn the language.  R supports rich data visualizations and you will learn how to use these to fit your needs.  The goal of this session is to demystify R and give you a basic understanding of R programming.  The focus is on the programming language so only a minimal understanding of statistics is needed.

  • Background - what is R, a little history
  • Installing and using R and R Studio
  • Developing in R:
        - The R CLI
        - R Studio
  • Vectors - The Heart of R
  • R Programming Language Structures
  • Writing functions
  • Writing and using Vectorized functions

  • R Classes Built on Vectors
  • Loading External Files
  • Accessing SQL Server
  • Object Orientated programming
  • Creating Visualizations in RIntegrating R with Windows via PowerShell.
