Welcome to SQLSaturday Denmark
This is the 5th edition of SQLSaturday Denmark.
SQL Saturday is a training event for SQL Server professionals and those wanting to learn about SQL Server. Admittance to this event is free, all costs are covered by donations and sponsorships. Please register soon as seating is limited, and let friends and colleagues know about the event.
Full day workshop
This year again we are doing preconference workshops the day before the event (Friday 6th). This is really good value for the price (130 € early bird and 150 € full-price) so please spread the word around you and don't forget to register on our precon web site : http://www.sqlsaturday.dk
Azure Analysis Services in a day
You are already using SSAS Tabular mode and are interested in moving into the cloud? Or Tabular Mode is on your roadmap and you are not sure if cloud or on-prem is the right strategy for you? Then this full day workshop could be useful. This hands-on day will give you a first insight into possibilities as well as challenges. We will cover the following topics
- Overview over the current feature set
- Discussion of strengths and weaknesses from a strategic perspective (e.g. calculating a business case)
- Create your own Azure Analyis Server
- Import an existing tabular model
- Install and register an on-premise gateway for a local data source
- Integrate the model into a corporate BI landscape
- Look into possibilities for maintenance and automization
Prerequisites: You’ll need a laptop that allows you to communicate with the Azure portal.
Advanced R Programming
If you’re relatively comfortable with R but find yourself needing to level up your skills this day is for you. Whether you’re hitting in-memory constraints, needing the latest and greatest machine learning algorithm, having to code defensively, or simply needing to get more stuff done, you’ll get a lot of this day of training. This hands-on day will equip you with more tools for performing data engineering and data science in R.
We’ll be covering the following:
– Fast and efficient data processing in R with data.table for improved native R performance
– Working with active external connections in dplyr to push data manipulation to databases
– Leveraging functional programming for working with lists, unstructured data objects, and improving error handling
– Going beyond base R statistics with native-R solutions (caret and the tidyverse) and connected solutions (h2o and spark) for better interfaces, new techniques, and working at scale
Performance Monitoring & Troubleshooting
You are in a DBA, Developer or Consultant role, supporting SQL Server Databases and often someone asks you to take a look at a badly performing database application, certain queries or even “the whole server”. And over and over again you find yourself in the situation of “how to find the root cause in the least amount of time”.
This full-day Precon will teach you techniques for general troubleshooting and performance analysis from start-up to advanced techniques.
Among them are:
SQL Server Architecture & Internals – the fundament to understanding complex correlations
Monitoring Methodology, Tools & Techniques
Dynamic Management Views (DMVs)
Extended Events for Workload & Query-Analysis
Investigating Memory Problems
Identifying and Remediating Plan Regression
Analysis of Indexes & Statistics
Detecting I/O Latency problems
Investigating Tempdb Performance
Locking & Blocking Analysis, Concurrency problems
What to look for with In-Memory objects
Note that we will not look (back) at Profiler however and solely focus on the current tools & techniques working from SQL Server 2012 onwards up to SQL Server 2016.
While no one has evolved into a Performance-Tuning-Master in one single day, you can be sure to learn valuable techniques and concepts to build upon for day-to-day work. And of course we will also discuss possible solutions or even implement them live. So at your next phone call “Help, the server is slow!” you know will where to start.
Expect lots of demos and a deep dive into core concepts of SQL Server.
Hands-on: If you want to play along please bring a laptop running SQL Server 2012 or newer, with at least 20GB of free drive space. I will distribute the demo databases for you to restore, and you can follow along with the demos with the likewise provided scripts. But you are welcome to just sit back and consume this one fully packed one day precon.
Prerequisites: Basic understanding of the SQL Server relational engine and Transact-SQL, Basic familiarity with Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) and Query Plans
So save the dates, 6th and 7th of October 2017 and join us in sharing knowledge.
