Common SQL Server Mistakes and How to Correct Them with Tim Radney

Making mistakes is natural, but learning from them and avoiding them in the future takes effort. There’s no substitute for experience or the shared wisdom of others to help you learn what mistakes to avoid and how to correct them. In this full-day workshop, aimed at developers working with SQL Server as well as junior/accidental DBAs, Tim will share with you a ton of what he’s learned over the years from working and consulting at multiple Fortune 500-level companies. You’ll hear about real-world environments he has worked on where there was a high impact from administrators making mistakes in how SQL Server was configured and administered. We will cover key topics such as backups, recovering from disasters, database maintenance, consistency checks, security reviews, installation best practices, and monitoring and troubleshooting performance issues. By the end of the day you’ll be more comfortable with your ability to support SQL Server because you will know what you need to do (and what not to do!) and have a checklist of items to take home to make sure your SQL Server environment is configured properly.

Tim Radney

Azure Infrastructure for the DBA with Joey D'Antoni

In this daylong session, we’ll review all the various infrastructure components that make up the Microsoft Azure platform. When it comes to moving SQL Server systems into the Azure platform having a solid understanding of the Azure infrastructure will make migrations successful and making support solutions much easier.
Designing your Azure infrastructure properly from the beginning is extremely important. An improperly designed and configured infrastructure will provide performance problems, manageability problems, and can be difficult to resolve without downtime. As Azure scales around the world many more companies, no matter where they are located, will be begin moving services from on-premises data centers into the Azure Cloud, and a solid foundation is key to successful migrations.

Joseph D'Antoni is a Senior Consultant and Microsoft Data Platform MVP with over 20 years of experience working in both Fortune 500 and smaller firms. He is a Principal Consultant for Denny Cherry & Associates and lives in Malvern, PA. He is a frequent speaker at major tech events like Microsoft Ignite, PASS Summit, and Enterprise Data World. He blogs about all topics technology at joeydantoni.com. He believes that no single platform is the answer to all technology problems. He holds a BS in Computer Information Systems from Louisiana Tech University and an MBA from North Carolina State University, and is the co-author of the Microsoft book "Introducing SQL Server 2016”.

Zero to Hero with PowerShell and SQL Server
Half-day (afternoon)  with Robert Cain

Today's DBA is under more pressure than before to manage ever increasing workloads. And not just in your local SQL Server installations, but now supporting cloud based databases in AzureSQL. But don't worry, there is an answer! Automation, using PowerShell.
In this course we'll look at using PowerShell with SQL Server. You'll see how to use the SQL Server PowerShell module to explore your SQL Server installation, then do more and more tasks such as backups, and executing scripts against your databases.
Next we'll branch out into the cloud, using PowerShell with your Azure SQL instance. You'll see how to take a local SQL Server database and import into Azure SQL, after which you'll see how to run scripts against your Azure SQL databases.
Finally, we'll roll up our sleeves and get low level. Underlying the SQL Server module is the SMO, or SQL Management Object library. You'll see how to connect directly to the SMO from PowerShell, often gaining big speed advantages over using the SQL Server module. Come see example after example of ways you can automate your life with PowerShell and SQL Server.

Robert Cain (http://arcanecode.com) is a Microsoft MVP, MCTS Certified in BI, and is the owner of Arcane Training and Consulting, LLC. He is also a course author for Plurasight, and co-author of 4 books. A popular speaker, Robert has presented at events such as the SQL PASS Summit, TechEd, CodeStock, and numerous SQL Saturdays. Robert has over 25 years experience in the IT industry, working in a variety of fields ranging from manufacturing to telecommunications to nuclear power.
