Pre-Conference Seminars - The best training value in town!
Tune SQL Like a Guru! with Kevin Boles
In this precon event we will cover a wide array of topics that form the backbone of my SQL Server performance analysis and tuning work. As a LONG-time relational engine consultant I have repeatedly found that the majority of clients I work with get amazing improvements by simply putting to use a fairly small collection of knowledge and tools. We will cover many topics, including:
- Server, virtualization and database configuration
- Optimization processes
- Finding bad code to tune
- Understanding query plans
- Improving design
- Improving code (LOTS of this!!)
- Profiler use and analysis (I use this ALL the time :-)
- Extended events
- Temp object usage
- Waits and IO stall analysis
- Performance enhancements in recent versions of SQL Server
We will look at these things from a variety of angles, while also covering many of the tips, tricks, tools, etc. I have collected in my almost 50,000 hours of working with and studying the SQL Server engine and database applications that run on it. I promise you will come away with lots of immediately-applicable information which you can take back to work and Tune Like A Guru!
Prerequisites: Preferably an intermediate-level knowledge/experience in SQL Server and TSQL and some familiarity with reading execution plans.
Kevin is a SQL Server expert, working exclusively with the product since v6.5. With 30 years of database experience and almost 50,000 hours of SQL Server engine experience, he holds many related certifications, is an MCT and was a SQL Server MVP from 2007 to 2012. He has been a very successful independent consultant for 25+ years. Kevin is also a very frequent speaker, having presented at many User Groups and over 100 SQL Saturday conferences! His passion is the relational engine - especially designing, building, analyzing and tuning high-performance database applications.

Data Modelling: No PlayDoh Required with Leslie Andrews
While Data Scientists may be the hottest buzz word, having a data model that is easy for
consumption by those people is the hidden secret of data analysis. Learn the secret of data
modelling in this full-day, hands-on course so that you can be the hero of your analysts by
providing data in an easy to use format.
After a brief introduction to the third normal form and dimensional models, we will work through
converting a paper form into a third normal form model for data collection and creating a
dimensional model to report from that collection. Finally, we will create a Power BI Model and
create some visualizations.
• Database and Application Developers looking to expand their knowledge of database models.
• Data Analysts who want an introduction to the modelling that will make analysis easier.
• Anyone who wants to learn more about database design and modelling
• Part 1 - The Data Model: A Perfect Ten (introductory presentation)
• Part 2 - New Mexico UCR Form conversion to 3NF (hands-on lab)
• Part 3 - New Mexico UCR Form conversion to Dimensional Model (hands-on lab)
• Part 4 - Power BI Modelling Tool (introductory presentation)
• Part 5 - Modelling the data with Power BI (hands-on lab)
• Part 6 - Data Exploration (hands-on lab)
• Slides - 10%
• Demos - 10%
• Hands-on Labs - 80%
Note that as this is a hands-on pre-con, participants will be required to bring a laptop with a
working Power BI installation and a data modelling tool. Full details on this will be provided prior
to the session.
Leslie Andrews is the Database Architect for the City of Albuquerque Police Department. She is
