  • Outside of these special pre-cons, buying similar instruction will cost 5 or 6 times as much, and that's before your travel and lodging costs.

Creating Effective Power BI Reports
Microsoft Data Platform MVP, Meagan Longoria

  • Quick summary:   Bookmarks, brain pixels, and bar charts: creating effective Power BI reports

    In this all-day session, we'll cover Power BI features, techniques for building reports, visual design concepts, and the basics of human perception. You'll learn how to choose an appropriate visual for the message you want to communicate and how to optimize that visual for human consumption. Then we'll cover how to arrange multiple visuals in a report to create a coherent message or story.
  • Bio:   Meagan Longoria is a business intelligence consultant with Denny Cherry & Associates who lives in Denver, Colorado. She is a Microsoft Data Platform MVP. Meagan spends a lot of time thinking about how to use data integration, DAX, and data visualization techniques to make data useful for people. She enjoys sharing her knowledge and experiences at conferences and user group meetings as well as through her blog (DataSavvy.me).

Pre-con 2 - Friday
Introduction to T-SQL: From Writing SELECTs to JOINs to Performance Tuning
Mike Byrd

  • Quick summary:   This course will concentrate on the TSQL SELECT statement; its syntax, usage, and performance tuning. It will take the attendee from a basic level of understanding to being able to write, understand, and performance tune complex queries. Classroom sessions will be about one-fourth lecture and three-fourths demos. All materials will be available for download.
  • Bio:   Mike Byrd - Senior Database Engineer, ByrdNest Consulting
    Former rocket scientist and USAF Fighter Pilot -- now a SQL Server geek (24 years)! Past opportunities include free-lance technical writer for PC Magazine, Senior Software Manager for government sponsored munitions effectiveness committee, and insurance company CTO. Currently senior database engineer consultant for several Austin companies.

    Presenter at 17 SQL Sat sessions in 2016, 10 in 2017, 8 in 2018 (Cambridge) and Chicago, Jacksonville, Dallas, Pensacola, Austin, and Baton Rouge in 2019; as well as several local SQL Server user's groups in Ft. Worth, Austin, and San Antonio; and 2 Virtual DBA presentations in 2018.
